The Duet

It seems my sweet American Tree Sparrow couple is really
a Chipping Sparrow couple!  I was looking up the difference
in markings for the female and discovered that the black
eye band and beak and light grey breast distinguish
them from the Tree Sparrows (who have brown
eye bands, yellow beaks and speckled breasts).
So, now we all know!

    1. The cheap ALL the time, don't they? I love how very tiny they are.
House sparrows are double their size!

    2. They ARE tiny! But did you notice how big their eggs are accordingly?! Wow!

      Delete
    3. I've never seen their eggs! I can't tell if these have a nest or not. It seems they are always in the feeder and not keeping any eggs warm!

  5. Great shot of the pair. Betsy. Of course both varieties are not known here in UK
but you do have some wonderful bird types there and you capture them so beautifully.
Are you sure she has not given him a black eye for something he did wrong? :)

  9. Most times the birds are flying by so fast that subtle differences in their markings are hard to see. thank goodness we have you to take pictures and point them out to us :-)

    1. Well, I didn't make it. The Mister brought it home from a business lunch. Instead of pasta, they used tortillas and the meat sauce had Mexican spices instead of Italian...kind of like taco filling. It actually wasn't very good. The quesadillas and churros, however, were really yummy.

    2. Betsy I have a recipe similar with tortillas but with itslian filling:)

    3. Yours is probably better! ha.

  11. They look quite operatic to me - singing their heads off. They are really going at it - makes me laugh! So does that mean there has to be a recount in the bird-identifying contest? :-) It's funny because when we did that contest I was looking at tons of different sparrow pics to try and ascertain which was which. Such variety. Very confusing... along with the clematis!!

    1. I looked back at the contest and that one really was an American Tree Sparrow!

http://myfivemen.blogspot.com/2014/01/some-randomness-and-winner.html Brown eye band and yellow beak.

I do remember looking them up to make sure I had them correct at the time.

    2. Oh, I believe you! I was just remembering that when we did that quiz I could not believe the variety there was - of a simple sparrow! And even then I didn't get it right - so much choice. And what is really curious is how they relate to each other in size. The sweet couple above look teeny tiny. Amazing.

    3. I see. You said 'recount' so I thought you were thinking there was an error. Yep, lots of varieties!

  18. I have all but given up on identifying all the birds who visit me. My mom knew so many of them and I just don't.
I like how yours are singing to each other. I wonder what song it was?
