Bird Bath Bling

There's a joke going around Pinterest that we all
'pin' hundreds of ideas, recipes and projects but don't
ever do any of them!  A new board has been started by
some entitled, "Pinned It ~ Did It" where you pin the
projects that you actually did so you have a fun record of it.

Well, I really have done quite a few of my pinnings
and think it would be fun to start that board myself!

Today I did this idea that I pinned!
Use vintage insulators in the center of your birdbath
as decor.  The blue also attracts birds to the water.

The top photo was taken standing in the garden.

But when I  went inside and looked out, this is what I saw!

Another idea I pinned was to put real copper pennies
in the water to prevent algae from growing.
That would be pennies dated before 1982.

    1. I was so happy to see the birds in it already! So fun!

  2. Does it make them think the water is bluer than it is so there is more of an initial attraction to it? I just love the look of it... sparkling and reflecting.

    1. I think the blue just catches their eye. I think it looks so pretty...a little more interesting than having it stand their plainly.

  3. Great use of those Betsy!
We put a large round rock in our feeders at the cottage...they like to sit on the rock!
Also, helps the smaller birds get a drink!
What about if they want to take a bath?
Perhaps they could "dive" in,eh? Hahaha!
    Cheers!

    1. I watched the song sparrow take a bath. There is still plenty of room ....hard to tell by the photo...probably 6 inches around the rim. He was splashing up a storm. Maybe it feels more like a spa now. haha.

    1. If you do this, I wanna see a photo! :)

The lady that did the pennies said she has a large birdbath and she uses 7 pennies and it does well. I could only find 3 copper pennies around here so far, but my bath is pretty small. I'll have to check the couch cushions! :)

Saw the web links as well, Betsy.
Fascinating that the blue vintage insulators attract birds. Hopefully you might get some bluebirds! fingers crossed.

I did not know about copper in birdbaths being an algae repellant. I will add some in mine tomorrow. I have some old copper piping and lots of old copper coins.

    1. Brilliant ideas, don't you think? The worst part about a bird bath is how the algae grows so quickly.

  13. That's a very cool idea! I have a pintrest account, but don't use it. Just could never seem to get into it. I recently got an email saying that someone had hacked my account and that several pictures had been removed from it.

  14. Yes, until now I have had to use a wire brush to clean the bird bath - now I'll use science - copper! brilliant!

  16. Your birdbath is beautiful. And the birds must love it.
I tried the penny thing. When I went out to check on the pennies, they were gone!
I assume it wasn't the birds.

    1. No kidding? Good grief. Now you just give them books to take. ha.

  17. Never knew pennies could do that
Maybe that is why they got rid of them at our mat
To hoard away just in case
They need to prevent algae at our place
And get the birdies down low
What? no cat to show lol

    1. Maybe that's really why we throw coins in fountains, you know?
We thought we were making a special wish flow.
But it was really just a little trick
to keep the algae away. How slick!
      lol....

    2. Could be how it started indeed
So way back when they were smart and we just got dumber at our feed

    3. Better stick to shooting stars
and keep your coins in a few jars.
      ha.

  18. Love the blue look in the bird bath, and it appears to be a hit with the birds. too. Interesting about the pennies. I've packed, showered, clean out the frig so I don't come home to green mold..haha...now I'm taking a break to visit a few friends before we head out in the morning.

    1. Sounds like you're all ready to go! Does Molly get to go this time? Is she laying on your suitcase?

    2. My cousin (on the way) has been asking us to take care of Molly...so we are going to leave her there this time. I know she will be spoiled rotten, as they are dog lovers. It's makes it easier since we will be spending one night in a Motel after the celebration, and Jill has three cats...HaHa..but she saw her suitcase by mine, so I think she OK.

    3. Oh, she will love that! Safe travels!

  20. I am definitely doing the penny idea! My bird baths both get lots of algae . . . never thought about pennies, but that's brilliant!

  21. The penny idea sounds great. I never have algae... I think it might be something that happens when your birdbath is more in the shade??? The blue jars have me confused ( and that happens easily). Have to look that up. I check my Pinterest boards like every two weeks ( recipes more). I'm always amazed at the stuff I forget!

  22. I've thought about getting a bird bath, but in the heat of summer the water would evaporate quickly and I'd forget to check the water levels leaving the birds high and dry :-)
