Coin Rings

Have you heard of coin rings?
I had never heard of them but stumbled upon them
on Etsy.  Tom Dugdale has a cool little busienss going there!
The outer part of a coin is cut and then
instead of laying flat like a washer, it is turned
so it is a ring!  This one, which I really loved
because of the ivy and beading was originally
a Canadian Large Cent.

This is how it looked originally...

The price was only $14.99, so I thought I'd get one
to see if it was really that great in person.
Yes, I think it's very cool!
I think it looks like an antique rose gold ring!

I just had to show you! :)

He also makes them out of all the state quarters!
I'm thinking I need an Ohio one!
I told the lovely Lauren that having two, one from
Ohio (for Taylor) and one from Pennsylvania (for her)
would be really cool stacked together!
I might have to get an Indiana and Ohio set to
stack for myself! :)

Tom's shop is Coin Rings and Things.

  4. What a neat idea, but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable actually doing it.
That childhood belief of it being wrong to destroy minted coins is hard to get past.

    1. PS. I still can't find a real answer as to if it's legal or not. Apparently it is, since they have those coin squashing machines in public places.

    2. Not sure about the American rules....but, the boyfriend and I agree that for the Canadian coins....it is pretty darn illegal!
      Interesting to actually find out....
      Love the ring though, Betsy!
      Cheers!

    3. When I was at The Country Living Fair this past summer, there was a booth of coin jewelry. He had his legal papers right there framed on the wall of the booth...it was all on the up and up and perfectly legal.

    4. For Canadian coins...if it is legal tender.....it cannot be altered. It would be treason! Aren't we cool? Hahaha!

    5. Maybe it has something to do with them not being in distribution anymore?

    6. ...because it was only this one canadian coin...not any others that are still minted.

    1. Yep, I knew they were all done.
This way they can have even more fun.
Not just a penny any more
but a pretty ring on every shore!

    2. The pennies are too small though
That just got taken from our show

    3. Oh, I don't know. You're pretty skinny.
One could fit around your little shinnies.

  8. I enjoyed looking through the chap's online shop. Beautiful work, I must say! No English coins, though. Maybe I should get an Ohio one? (smiling) And about it being legal, he has almost 900 sales. Seems to me Etsy would have shut him down by now if it wasn't. Enjoy your ring. It really is lovely!

    1. Well, thanks Vince! I see Ireland but not England! Maybe some day.

Yes, Etsy is very strict about laws and their policies. They removed one of my items one time because it wasn't vintage enough (missed it by a couple of years unknowingly) And this shop isn't the only one...I saw another one, too!

  9. So beautiful and unusual, Betsy. I love rose gold and this reminds me so much of it. I think I will have to get one too! Suffering from a heavy heart tonight... see my FB page. I think you knew John-Michael as well. I feel so very sad, but so grateful to have shared a deep friendship with him. Hold your loved ones close. xoxo

    1. I thought of you when I got this, Suzanne! I knew you'd want one, too!

Aw, I'm so sorry to hear about John-Michael. I didn't know he wasn't well! Haven't talked to him in over a year but he sure did send me some sweet and encouraging emails. He had the gift of making you feel like you were the most important person in the world, didn't he? Thanks for letting me know of his passing...

    1. Yes, I think it's a neat idea. Have to remember where I was born! Didn't live there long, but ancestors did and still do!

  12. Very cl;ever idea.
I think the centre of the coin must first be cit out and since this is only George V it doesn't really matter lol.
Then I think heat must be applied and perhaps transferred to a solid rod then hammered into a ring.
    Voila!!

What a cool idea and a hedge against falling currencies. lol

  15. These are so cool! I have a coin necklace that I love but I have never seen coin rings. Thanks for showing these. It reminds me of the spoon rings that were popular in the late 70's. Do you remember those? I still have mine.

    1. I do remember those! I had a spoon ring in high school! Have no idea what happened to it, though! It would be an antique now...haha...
