What would we do without our feathered friends, eh Betsy? Hours of entertainment.....and so "cheep".......hahaha! Haven't seen many Woodpeckers this winter....I see them....and hear them....in the spring, at the cottage... What are your plans or NYE?
NYE....not sure! We might take all the kids out to eat...big kids included. New Years Day....I do have the traditional pork/kraut dinner planned, but that's it!
I must confess, I ran out of birdseed, and it wasn't the birds that chewed me out...it was those squirrels ... The seed I buy has sunflower seeds, and the squirrels take those and leave the rest. So a BIG bag is on my groc. list for 2014.
Love you little woodpecker...he just wants a safety net. Guess he didn't get the memo. HaHa
ha. he is obviously a newbie and doesnt know better...at least he has a good head on him and knows not to eat it all up right away and save it for a rainy day...smiles...nice markings too...
Yes where is Vincent? It seems most of your readers miss him and his cheery comments! Maybe a vote should be taken as to whether he can return? I think all of your readers but one would welcome him back! Well, maybe two readers. But that is still a minority! Lurking isn't the same! He wants to join the party, not look longingly through the window!
You have a multitude of gorgeous birds visiting your garden you luck you! We get the odd crow and magpie now and then but of course we get Blue Tits and Great Tits which are wonderful little birds. Today I noticed a Blue Tit looking at the bird house I made and no doubt he will try his best to coax some lady into it, provided she likes the decor and surroundings. They are so fussy these days and want a choice of two or three houses to choose from, near a swimming pool and local shops and not to mention a good school. LOL. One year I did see a blue Budgie flying around, obviously escaped from somewhere. He was most disappointed that no-one would squawk back to him. Coming back to your post - I just love that woodpecker and wonder if they ever get a headache due to their constant banging with theitr beaks on the hard wood. I saw your latest comment on your previous post and replied.
I think I'm the only one in the neighborhood that has bird seed out for them! I have my feeder just outside the window where I can see it while sitting at my desk. Great fun...I never tire of it! You crack me up about the lady being picky about the decor and surroundings! Our wrens actually do that, you know! The male builds several nests and calls for a lady bird to come. When she does, he takes her on a tour of all the nests and she chooses one! But then she tears it apart and puts it back together the way she wants it and he helps her! haha. I read about this once and then got to witness it in our backyard. Fascinating..and funny, too! Lady birds aren't too different from us humans! I'm sure she chose one closest to the beauty shop and bakery, too. lol....
Yes I heard about the poor male Wren having to build lots of houses - but I never realised she tore the ones she didn't like to pieces and actually get him to help her - the little WUSSY and WIMP lol.. You see she is just testing him to see if he can stand up to her and show his strong masculinity. She is obviously so disappointed that he is not the man she is looking for and that he seems unable to measure up to her expectations. You see the female mind is most fascinating because she really wants him to tell her to buzz off! or go and fly a kite . . . . . . and only if he did so then she might flutter her eyelashes and say, "It's a lovely house, dear, I don't mind where I am as long as I am with you!". Oh dear I feel a story coming on - all your fault - better start writing it LOL
LOL!!! Oh, now see...I think you have us figured out pretty well. Are you sure you aren't a psychiatrist? haha. Yeah, you better start writing...can't wait to read this one. :)
LOL. Boy we have some fun, don't we. Just love this stuff but I am turning in now to get some much needed beauty sleep - I want to be wide awake for tomorrow. Speak soon
Hey! How did you do that?? Noticed your post on my sidebar and it says you posted it 13 minutes ago???? Miraculous! Which one of us is a time traveller, cause we sent a few comments to each other 9-10 hours ago!!!! Has Woody taught you about warp drive? ROFL
Ah! you little cheat!! What an ingenious way of keeping Woody at the top of the side bar!! Did not know blogger did that! Don't tell everyone - our little secret, otherwise they will all want to do it! LOL
HNY, Ed :) Enjoy this evening! We're meeting the big kids and going out to eat. No place fancy...my boys wouldn't do well in that kind of place....but it will be fun to all be out together!
Isn't he the busy one? You got some good shots considering how industrious he was. I love the first one where he is a pretzel hanging on by his toes. Such a vibrant red too. I have not seen one in a very long time, but I do hear them from time to time when I am in a more rural area or at friends' places who don't live downtown. I love the sound they make. Kind of nostalgic.
Hi Betsy .. burying his cache from your cache - sensible chap ... always hedge your bets .. I'd never realised they'd hidden food for harder times .. interesting snippet .. love the photos - cheers Hilary
Yes...cute little industrious chap! I think the dig in to the bark to find bugs to eat during the summer. Or maybe their just finding what they hid away during the winter? ha.

ReplyDeleteWhere did Vincent go to?
Vincent must be on holiday! :)
DeleteWhat a pretty woodpecker! A little daft, but very pretty!! So funny about the birds and the funny little ways that they behave with the food. xx
ReplyDeleteHe's a busy little guy...most of my photos were blurry!
DeleteThanks, doll. Now I can't get the Woody Woopecker theme out of my head!
ReplyDeleteNice! Their (birds) habits are so interesting!
ReplyDeleteAren't they? I suppose he feels he has to store it up so he doesn't go hungry. :)
DeleteI must confess, I ran out of birdseed, and it wasn't the birds that chewed me out...it was those squirrels ... The seed I buy has sunflower seeds, and the squirrels take those and leave the rest. So a BIG bag is on my groc. list for 2014.

Oh funny! The cats keep the squirrels away mostly....but they went for the peanuts when I did have them.
Deleteha. he is obviously a newbie and doesnt know better...at least he has a good head on him and knows not to eat it all up right away and save it for a rainy day...smiles...nice markings too...
ReplyDeleteYeah...he reminds me of the Ant and the Grasshopper fable! He, being the ant, of course! :)
Deletelol, thats funny! I suppose he knows theres a cold front moving in, stocking up he is!
ReplyDeleteI heard about that cold front! Brrrr!

ReplyDeleteOh, geesh! What am I going to do with you?
DeleteI don't see many woodpeckers around my house...they're always a treat when they show up.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen one in a long time! He sure was fun to watch!
DeleteHe is quite nimble too
ReplyDeleteStretching about in view
I guess he has to save some just in case
Mr. Cardinal beats him to the seed race
Never thought of that!
DeleteMight be a contest of the red and the black!
That little guy is prepping for winter. He will be so glad when he shows up everyday at your place and food is on the "table"!
ReplyDeleteHe'll think he's in bird heaven, where the seed is there in plenty, served daily! ha. Maybe he'll stay and have a family in the spring. I'd love that!
Deleteaah this bird is sooooo sweet ! what lovely are always your pics Betsy!
ReplyDeleteI think he's sweet, too! And he really doesn't look anything like Woody! haha.
DeleteIm agree ! he is more beautiful !!
DeleteThis year I had seen a lot of birds in my yard!

ReplyDeleteThey are kind of nostalgic! That woodpecker sound fits in with banging screen doors and crickets! :)
DeleteExactly!
DeleteHey! I just saw a cardinal and a woodpecker in your shop! How coincidental is that? :-)
DeleteI laughed when I saw that last night! Talk about a coincidence! :)
