Auction Day

Over the summer I worked on my sea shell collection,
putting them in categories, researching their names
and labeling jars.  It was a fun project!
Today there was a large fish bowl full of shells
and I got the winning bid for only $2.00!

I enjoyed pulling out shells when I got home, especially when
I was able to recognize them and say their names!

Better than that was pulling out shells that were new to me!
Many I recognized from my research, but didn't have any of my own!

My new favorites include ~
Mexican Flat Scallops, as big as my palm
teeny tiny star fish ~ can't believe they weren't broken!
pieces of coral ~ really love this round piece that looks floral
Pearlized Turban ~ this is beautiful in person
Babylon ~ has a leopard print
Candy Cane ~ had one of these as a child (long ago! ha)
Indian Tibia ~ I'd never heard of this one
and Gibbosa Olives ~ only had Lettered Olives before!

And as a real cool sign that the collection should grow,
this group of old jars came home with me, too!

OK, I'm off to wash the jars and
 make some new name tags!

  5. Wow you'll need a new house
Won't even be able to fit a mouse
As your sea shell collection fills each jar
Could make the Guinness book of world records for sea shells at your bar

  12. They look so lovely in the fishbowl. Almost seems a shame to take them out, but.... they will look great in your new (!) jars too! Did you know that you were going to be a Conchologist when you grew up!! (shell collector that is)

    1. I thought that, too...but the shells were really dusty. I think that bowl sat untouched for decades. I'll use the fish bowl for some of the shells....it's perfect for display. It, and all the jars are going in the dishwasher today.

Conchologist? Did you make that up? You are TOO funny! Yeah, that's me..a self-taught conchologist. lol.... (spell-check doesn't like that word!)

    2. Nope, I promise, it is a real word. At Basildon Park where I work we have a "shell room" which is used to display the shell collection of the mother of the last owner of the house. The collector was Lady Charlotte Iliffe (deceased), she was very well thought of apparently in the shell collecting world and was invited to become a member of various Conchocological societies. I know because I have to say that word when I give guided tours of the house and have to talk about the room.

So, there you go, you are a Chonchologist - get yourself a badge with it on!! (and be glad that you don't have to say it regularly to a room full of strangers!)

    3. Wow...that is very cool! How interesting! I only have shell shelves (say that three times fast! ha.) Can't imagine a shell room. But my oldest did just get married and move out and I have an empty room! lol. I need to add chonchologist to my list of titles! lol...

    4. I see a whole new project in your future.... When I get a chance I will try and take some pics of the room and post them on my blog!

    5. Just did a Google search of that shell room. Wow! Those lighted displays are amazing. At first I didn't realize there were shells decorating the doors themselves! I think Lady Charlotte would have liked my shell mirror that hangs in my bedroom! :)

  15. What a fun collection. I really like your old canning jars. I've got a lonely glass cap waiting for a jar to sit on. I probably used the jar as a sugar bowl and broke it leaving the glass cover a widower.

    1. I bet a jar without it's lid will show up at the thrift store some day! Then it can have a second marriage~ ha.

    2. Yes, and maybe I'll find a blue jar and it can be a mixed marriage. :)

  17. I really do wonder how big your house is! Or maybe you just have a lot more shelving than we do. I love the look of your shell collection but we wouldn't have the room for it here. Possibly because we already have far too much stuff.... My stuff, his stuff, stuff made by the children, stuff that belonged to my parents and grand parents.... you get the picture.

    1. haha...oh, my house isn't that big. But I do have a lot of built in shelving. Four rooms have a wall that is entirely built in shelves! I love 'stuff' but I also purge often...I take stuff to the thrift store all the time. In fact, I have shelves in closets and drawers in dressers that are empty! I do love my shelves, though....a great way to display pretty things and have them up and out of the way at the same time! And I don't have a lot of stuff from my parents and grandparents, either...just our own junk. ha.

    2. So impressed. We both find it tough to get rid of stuff. At least I try to throw thinks when they break. T just puts them to one side for him to mend... In about 5 years time. And usually on the kitchen work top. BTW love your new header photo of sunflowers.

  20. Dear Betsy, you are a true 'home-maker'! For homeless cats. And as well for the precious things and collections of people, who once put love and effort into them. I have seen quite a few of your posts now about saving beautiful things from somebody´s past, things that were gained with hard-earned money, like beautiful transfere plates or glass. Or things that were once made with skills and creativity, like the set of dish cloths you saved some time ago. All these things were most certainly cherished by someone and abandoned by someone else. I think, it´s a sad thing, that we throw away so many things, that are still beautiful and can still be useful, . And I find it most wonderful, that you give so many of these things a new 'life'! Am I sounding too pathetic to you?
    Love

    1. Oh, no...you don't sound pathetic! You sound just like me! :) I do think most of us have become so wasteful and many don't appreciate the beauty or worth of something. Doesn't mean you have to become a hoarder, but I can't see tossing something in the trash that could be useful to someone else.
