Summer List

Foxglove in my back yard.

A few weeks ago, the lovely Martha posted about making
a summer To Do list.  Not chores, but fun things...things to
make sure she enjoyed the season to the fullest!
I thought was a good idea and have been inspired that
she has already done some fun things like see a waterfall,
buy an ice cream cone and watch some fire works!

Since it's now June and we're all done with graduations,
open houses and wedding showers, I thought I'd put my mind
toward enjoying summer and make a list of my own.
And I'm not really late, right?  Summer isn't official until
the 21st!  Even though Memorial Day does seem to kick it off! ha.

Funny thing is, when I think of a To Do list, it's chores!
My mind started thinking of washing windows, weeding
flower beds and organizing the garage.   I readily admit
that I have a hard time doing things that seem lazy
or self-pampering.  But that is all the more reason to
jump into a list that is merely for the enjoyment of summer!

So, here it goes!

  1. Eat a banana split
  2. Visit a farmer's market
  3. Go on a picnic
  4. Take a "Sunday afternoon drive"
  5. Fill the planters with flowers
  6. Make strawberry preserves (or any fruit)
  7. Watch fireworks
  8. Make s'mores
  9. Add bling to flip flops and wear my own creation
  10. Plant a garden of veggies, herbs and lettuces.
  11. Try a new kind of fruit
  12. Make homemade ice cream
  13. Buy that Foxglove I've wanted for years
  14. Take the boys on a train ride
  15. Get my colored pencils out and try drawing again
  16. Have morning coffee on the porch swing
  17. Take some bread to the pond and feed the ducks

And today I planted the Foxglove!

And I've started on the garden and flower pots.
Have I forgotten anything??

I'll have my list on my sidebar as of tomorrow so I can
check off things as I do them!  And you can hold me accountable
to do something besides blogging and chores. lol.  :)

Thanks, Martha!

  1. Beautiful flower!
I like the idea of a fun to do list. Taking the boys on a train ride sounds like you would have 3 joy filled boys!

    1. We haven't done that in years...yes, they will be thrilled! :)

    2. The plant in my picture is a vibernum. The flowers have a tiered effect - they are only on the top of the branches.

  2. You got a fun list there. Here's to making it happen. Cheers and boogie boogie.

    1. haha...I will do a boogie boogie if I get it all done! It's more than one thing a week, so I better get busy! :)

    2. But it's all fun things, you might even end up doing more than one per week. I mean, make ice cream. What a great thing to be on a to do list.

What flavor are you going to try first?

    3. Hmm...I hadn't thought that far. We love ice cream of any kind or flavor. I did see a chocolate gelato recipe on a blog recently that I thought looked amazing. :)

  3. Doesn't seem
Like that hard of a stream
You will get it all done
Or the cat will make fun
    Such a slacker
Avoiding the new fruit and eating a cracker
    See i can motivate
    At any rate haha
But yeah I'm all work too
    Sad but true

You should step outside and enjoy a sunset.
You would enjoy it, I bet! :)

    3. are you calling me a black pot?
I'll get you back a lot.
      lol....
How about if Martha says you should watch a sunset?
That would hold more clout, I bet.
      ha.

This morning i did see dawn
      Does that count
      For any amount?

    5. It counts if you stopped to savor it.
If you just glanced, then it doesn't count one bit!

    6. Hmmm I did a glance
At least that was more then they did in France
      As it was still dark
So i sorta hit the mark

  4. I don't see "Take a trip to Lake Erie" on that list???
I think you AND Martha would be a very welcome duo at the old place!!!
Great list Betsy...and the Foxglove is gorgeous...
    I will be watching you!!!!

  6. I like your list. If I run out of fun things, I'll hope over here for an idea or two. I can scarcely wait until summer is official, and then I'm going to drag it into September just because.

    1. Usually September is hot enough to be included! ha. And summer is official until the 21st! I like your 'go out for a burger'...maybe I'll add that one to mine! ha.

    3. Definitely! And I love them of any kind...even fast food. ha. I might just have to bring fast food home for dinner some night and really take a break! :) Oooh... I like that idea!

  7. Ah yes, it's too easy to forget the fun, self-pampering things from the old "to do list". Thanks for the reminder that I need to make one of my own.

  8. I like your list, but I must admit...a few of them looked like chores. You just have to put a little work into your fun list. That's our precious and hard working Betsy. We've moved up the trip to Oregon and will leave Friday. Jill has decided she needs Mom and Dad at the hospital when baby arrives on the 12th. So my list is packing, stopping the mail, getting a babysitter for Freddie the Fish, getting my little gift bags ready for the homes we will be staying on the trip and a loaf of Zucchini bread for snacking on the trip. (But it's all been fun).

    1. Yes, I suppose planting the garden really is work. haha.

Well, leaving early is exciting! How very fun! Does Molly get to go? I know she'll lay in the suitcase as soon as you get it out! haha.

Yeah...I know, I know...me, too! There's a reason that is the first on the list! haha. I'm already building it in my head! lol....

  10. I agree with Wanda - making preserves and planting a veggie garden seem like work to me. But I know you enjoy those things... still work though! It's funny you should post this today as I am now on holiday for the whole month of June. I am most likely staying in the city most of the time so I have started making a list of things I'd like to do. And some of them are as simple as taking a book to our roof garden and falling asleep five minutes into it! The foxglove is GORGEOUS! Love the colour and the cascading flowers - so pretty. Reminds me of my stays in England.

    1. Napping in the roof garden is exactly the kind of stuff I'm talking about...little enjoyable things that we just usually don't take time to do! I hope June is full of little lovely things like that for you! You really need a blog, Suz...so you can post your list! :)

      Delete
    2. I have been tempted to start one for some time... maybe I will in June! My fear is I won't "keep up" once I have started.

    3. well, the thing about blogs is that you remember that there are no rules! You can post once a week, once a month or once a day...it's totally up to you. The pressure only comes when you think you must do something...and you really mustn't. ha. :) Now that we have that all straight, start one! :) lol....

  14. LOVE this idea Betsy! (and Martha!) I have always felt guilty for doing me-things and I am realizing if I do NOT...I get WEARY! Love your list. My mother ALWAYS ate a banana split every summer when I was a child. ONE TIME, EACH SUMMER. She loved them. The Foxglove is gorgeous. Now, by publishing your list...you must report on them! :)

    1. I know! Why do we feel guilty?? I guess it's because if we sit and relax, we can see a dozen things around us that need to be done. Love the banana split story. :)

Yeah...publishing it is a great way for accountability!

  19. Hi Betsy,

What a wonderful idea. I have done one thing on your list and that is to eat a banana split. It was yummy!!! I hope summer is shorter this year but it will probably be a scorcher. Please let us know how you are doing on your list. Whatever you do if you are having fun then it is not a "chore".

    God bless.

    1. Everybody has eaten a banana split already! I feel so deprived! hahaha. :)
Hope this summer isn't a scorcher for you. Maybe another banana split will help> :)
I do agree, even work that is fun is not a chore. I potted flowers today, worked up a sweat
and thoroughly enjoyed getting dirt under my nails! :)

  20. Good idea, though it's interesting how people are different, as some of those (the gardening and cooking ones) would feel like chores to me. I realise they don't feel like hard work for you and I delight in your creative endeavours - precisely because lots of them are not things I'd dream up but part of me wishes I could. Maybe you're my female 'other half'. I'll come with you on the train trip, and I already had a banana split!

Sorry about the foxglove. Maybe it will be a late bloomer this year. ha.

  22. Foxgloves are my favourite too. The local woodlands and gardens are full of them, but sadly they are not in flower yet because we had a terrible winter and consequently a late Spring.

I looked at them in the garden today; all in bud, and asked them when am I going to see your flowers? And I threatened then with the hedge trimmers!

Believe it or not, but the local Garden centres are selling young plants at $4 each! Obviously aiming at the tourist market, well, you Americans will buy anything Made in Britain! (joke!)
