And Speaking Of Mothers...

Do you see her?

How about now?

Yes, that's right!  A ground hog has come to the zoo.
Or do you call them woodchucks?
Taylor thought it was a beaver. lol...

She's as wide as a barn with a tummy dragging on the ground.
I think babies are due soon!

She's nibbling on my violets and other things coming up through the ground!
She scuttles through the fence to the neighbor's shed when she sees me.
I think she has a burrow under it!

So, where is Mr. Woodchuck?
Will they eat my garden when I put it in?
How many babies is she going to have?
The cats seem to get along with her just fine.
Oh deary me!
LOL!

    1. Maybe she'd like to stay on the other side of the fence with the neighbor. I wouldn't mind at all. haha.

  2. We had woodchucks at our other house. They dug their burrow right in the middle of my garden. Well, someone put an end to that little deal right away!

    1. I've been reading up on them! I guess they make a big burrow with 3-5 escape routes! ha. I'm glad the burrow is at the neighbors!

    3. haha...well, Wanda...Martha and I have been chatting about visiting you for a mini vacation some day. That would be much more exciting than cats and woodchucks. haha.

    4. In my wildest dreams I can't imagine anything more fun than to have you and Martha together with me in Southern CA. I don't have a guest room, but you could flip a coin to see who gets the couch and who gets the loveseat!! Oh I just get exciting thinking about it.

    5. We'll have to save our pennies and see if we can't make it happen! We both need a vacation and we both want to meet you! How fun! :)

  7. Besty, the last thing you want is that groundhog to make itself comfy in your or your neighbor's yard. Yes they are cute as can be but they are oh so destructive. Let's just say, that burrow in your neighbor's yard will one day have an exit in your yard. And the only way you'll find it is when you step in it and twist your ankle. OH and they are mean as mean can be with really sharp teeth. You can watch this to see what I mean: http://animal.discovery.com/tv-shows/call-of-the-wildman/videos/turtleman-vs-groundhogs.htm

    1. Yeah, I was sure she was mean. Probably more so with a litter of little ones! I'm not making friends with her, that's for sure.

  8. Well, the word must be out among the neighborhood animals. Your yard is the place to be!!!

  9. Oh my word! You do not want that critter anywhere near your garden! Find a way to get rid of it, preferably BEFORE those babies are born!

    1. Live trap then remove it from your neighborhood, or better yet if you are not adverse to shooting it I would suggest someone with a shotgun and a steady hand. They are destructive even if they might seem 'cute'.

      Delete
    2. Oh, I'm not adverse but we're within the city limits and can. We did, however use a pellet gun (quieter) one time. We've trapped coons and moved them to the wooded lands outside the village before. I think I'll have The Mister talk to the neighbor. I never said she was cute. haha...I want her gone!

    3. My boys would hunt it with bow and arrow. It's quiet and effective and they are very handy with those things! My apologies for assuming you thought it cute. lol

      Delete
    4. haha..oh, it's cute..but it would be cuter away from here. :) Send those boys over with their arrows! I need to borrow them! I'm pretty sure we have a trap. Need to think of bait that doesn't attract cats. ha.

      Delete
    5. Oh I'm sure they'd be delighted. They keep pegging away at the chipmunks in my flowerbeds. They ARE cute but so annoying and they eat my bulbs! If they can hit those little things I'm sure they can hit the ground hog! I'm sure anything green that grows in the garden would be good bait in the trap.

    6. I know I'm not going to be able to put a garden in until we get her. She can have her family in the woods..there's a lovely creek there. I'm sure she'll enjoy it. haha.

  10. hahahahahaha come one come all
Sure has to be plastered at your hall
A woodchuck running through the house
Popping out babies woodchucks that look like a mouse
The kitties may not be so nice then
    There at your den

    1. Ew. I hope that doesn't happen!
They better stay over the fence in their den!
Don't need a mad mother woodchuck
throwing things so we have to duck!
      hahaha.

    2. haha hopefully she doesn't have good aim
If you she tends to blame

  11. its a good thing you don't have a dog, wood chucks can be ferocious fighters and will take on a dog, very nasty when cornered!
    Cute though aren't they,

    1. Yeah, cute...but I thought she looked mean..not one you would want to mess with...especially when she has babies. I'd be happy for her to leave!

  15. Well, I must say your groundhog is so much cuter than the freaky looking armadillo that decided to walk at night along our brick wall. Shudders! It was so ugly, I couldn't even pull out any cuteness. We do, however, have bunnies...everywhere! The house down the street plants pansies out front every year. All the tops are eaten off quickly...then they grow back...then the bunnies eat them again!

    ReplyDelete

    1. oh my goodness...that must have been a sight! I'll take bunnies any day over armadillos or ground hogs!

      Delete
  16. Oh my! I agree with some of the previous commenters that groundhogs and gardens are not a good combo. We had one living under our shed a few years ago and it was constantly in our garden until my husband was finally able to get rid of it. I'm surprised that the cats aren't bothered by her but maybe they're the ones who invited her over!

    1. I'm always surprised at how the cats aren't just unafraid of other animals but they seem friendly with each other. Must be that feral instinct and how they were raised outside by their wild moms. I've seen cats and a skunk lounging on the back porch together. ha. If they invited a ground hog over, I'm going to have to have a talk with them. ha.

  23. Oh they are MEAN and aggressive creatures when crossed!Cute to look at but those teeth and claws do damage. That Momma Ground Hog could kill one of your kitties! AND...she will eat your garden and MAYBE leave you a piece of a ROOT! Watch out for her!
