Vintage French Market Cart

Earlier this year, this wicker shopping cart was at an auction.
The consignor was there and said she bought it from a British
woman who brought it over from England years ago.
According to my friend, Keith, they aren't seen in
England (and he would know!) but are very common
in France (and he would know this, too!).  Maybe she
liked to holiday in France just like him. :)
She has a little antique shop in neighboring Yellow Springs, Ohio.
No, I didn't rescue it from the trash...I bid on this one!
I thought it was adorable!

I dressed it up for Christmas with a little tree,
huge pine cones and white lights.

I think it looks rather cheery on the front porch!

I hadn't displayed it well up until this point.
Umbrellas might look cute in it.
Any ideas for after the holidays...inside or out?

This is the extent of my outdoor Christmas decor.
Very simple.  Although I do love houses lined with lights
and wreaths in all the windows, I never seem to
actually make that happen on my own house. ha.

  2. Now that is something I would have certainly bid on! It's adorable and I love the story behind it. Couldn't have a better home than your front porch. If I had it here, it would hold one of my big poinsettia plants.

That's all you need on your front porch to look cheery and festive!

    1. What a great idea...a poinsettia would have been gorgeous in it! I might have to remember that for next year...but it would have to be inside in this cold weather.

  3. That's brilliant. I never would have seen the potential in that.

    1. Well, I seriously thought about wheeling it through the aisles at Kroger. :) I mean, it would be the 'green' way to shop and not need those plastic bags. haha.

  5. Who needs anything more when you have that adorable cart all lit up like you do!

Great place to hide things inside your home. Just add a blanket slumped over the side.

  7. this is soo cute!
I would keep it indoors and put christmas stuff inside for next year and top it off with silk flowers
It would make a gorgeous decoration for the house but I also would be tempted to use it. lol

    1. It is tempting to use it, but it's a little fragile. ...I don't know exactly how old it is.
Something light such as silk flowers is a great idea!

  8. I am short on decorations inside and out this year. They're still packed away in boxes. I don't know what has happened to my Christmas spirit. Maybe it's packed in one of those boxes too.

    1. I was like that last year! My Christmas spirit never did show up. I was depressed, I think....and broken hearted. Some years are just like that. Just relax and don't sweat it! :)

    2. Perhaps that is the problem. December just seems terribly sad for so many reasons... And then again, maybe there are just too many things on my plate again, ... and some of them are cookies. :)

    3. yes...or maybe both...sad and overwhelmed is not a good combination. I hope you have a magical Christmas and some things to make your heart warm and your spirit light! xo

    4. After reading yours and Martha's comments, I think we all have Christmases like that. Many things in our family to hard to talk about came in December. But this year...I'm not sure why ~ It's been the best Christmas for me in years. Even my dearest, said I haven't seen you so happy baking, singing, buying little gifts in years... Go figure. I'm blessed, and Martha I'm holding you in my heart for a new Christmas Spirit to be hiding under one of those cookies. Love you both so much.

    5. See, Martha...Wanda has given you the excuse you needed to eat all the cookies...just say you're looking for your Christmas Spirit, which could be hiding under one of them! haha. :)

Betsy...I love that basket...perhaps you should fill it with shortbread!!!

      HAhahaha...gosh I am funny..NOT!!!

      Cheers!

And pfft to cold for lights at ones feed
Plus have to take them up and take them down
    That just makes me frown
Yours is more at ease and a better sight
Then the many merry tacky flashing light

    1. Oh yeah, there are some tacky displays
      that can cause dismay.
      The blow up plastic figurines
and neon flashing lights make a scene.
And yes, the cold makes me want to say
simple is better! I like it that way!
      hahaha.

    2. Yeah those blow up things are crappy
The cat's claw wants to give them a tappy
      And boom they will go
      No longer to show

  10. Your Bristish wicker shopping basket is wonderful, Betsy! I think it would look pretty holding just about anything!

My only Christmas decorations this year are a wreath on my door and a pointsettia plant on my table-- I don't even have a tree! Next year will be different, I hope!

  11. Oh lovely! Simple is good btw!

Inside use- maybe keep some pretty throw blankets rolled up in it? you know out of the way yet close by if needed.

  15. Sorry Betsy, I've lived in Britain (the Mother Country?) since the Battle of Hastings (well, it seems like it anyway!) and I've never seen anything like that, but they are popular in France, I've seen the old dears pushing them around, along with lots of bicycles with wicker baskets and ordinary wicker shopping baskets. Despite the old fashioned look they are still very popular there. Maybe yours originated from France?

    1. Well, that's interesting! Maybe it really was from France! Where ever it came from, I do like it a lot. :)
