His Eye Is On The Sparrow

male house sparrow, from my kitchen window

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?
Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Luke 12:6-7; Matthew 10:29-31

~~~~~~~~~~~
I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free.
For his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
Civilla D. Martin, 1905
  2. How I love this song. In the 60's Don was Director of the Youth for Christ in Stockton, CA and we had a Rally and concert, and Ethel Waters sang "His Eye is on the Sparrow" and she finishes the line, "and I know he's watching "we"! Love that woman.. She sang that song many times at Billy Graham crusades. To meet her in person is one of my treasured memories.
    1. My mom used to watch Billy Graham crusades on TV when I was very young. I'm sure I heard Ethel Waters sing that. :) I mostly remember George Beverly Shea singing I'd Rather Have Jesus, though. How fun for you to heard her in person!
  7. How strange.
    "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even all the hairs of your head are numbered. 31 So do not be afraid."
    Obviously your Bible is different to my Bible. There is no mention of "you are worth more than many sparrows." and we have only TWO sparrows as against your FIVE, and they are only worth ONE penny! I wonder just how many changes there are in the book.
    I suspect the Bible is modified to suit different countries, but who by? Makes you think doesn't it.
    (I found a way to dodge the Blogger police by the way; I pretended that I was one of their flock!)
    Bright Blessings.
    1. No, Keith...it's not a contradiction. That's why I've listed both verses...one in Luke and one in Matthew. Two men, recalling what Christ said. The meaning is the same...God cares for the sparrows, but for you, he cares so much more!
  19. I know what those verses are meant to apply but reality says that, regardless, sparrows, kids, etc suffer horrid things every day around the world. Being watched over doesn't prevent it, sadly. I suppose that's why these are some of my least favourite NT verses actually.
