Spencer

Having autism and being nonverbal, he can type or write what he
wants.  But he really prefers to smile and look at you like this,
thinking that you can look in his eyes and read his mind.
I swear that works with his brothers, but not always with me!

Even so, how can you not smile back at that face?  ha ha.

    1. actually, no...not this time. He did this about 50 times today. It got to be so humorous, I would start laughing instead of trying to figure out what he wanted! ha.

  13. So, having my own autistic brother, I am curious. Just how well do the boys type? Are they "verbal" when typing?

PS. My brother also talks with his eyes. I always gave ina nd let him finish my milkshake no matter how much I wanted it myself.

    1. Spencer and Harry type very well! They spend a lot of time on their laptops doing internet searches...typing in detailed descriptions of trains and railroads. Their spelling is very good, too. alex is much less advanced, but can type in a few letters of a search to find a few youtube videos that he likes. School and computer classes have helped a lot, too.

    2. My brother is in his 50's now, so he never went to school like he would have today. I don't recall any of the kids with special needs being mainstreamed back then. I don't know if he ever learned to type and since he has a tendency to be destructive, we are hesitant to put anything expensive in front of him. Sad, huh? He does, however, have that look and has it perfected.

    3. I'm sure treatments and classes have improved so much over the years. Although our speech therapist is a total frustration and waste of time. :( But yes, computer class, typing and reading have all helped. They are main streamed less and less, but for a few years were completely when they were learning to read, etc.

When they were toddlers, I spent hours at our white board writing words, drawing a little picture of the word, and saying them. They couldn't get enough of it!

  18. I just tried to comment using my daughters Google account, Wendy Ascham, but she was not amused.

What I wanted to say was that Spencer has a "doppelganger" (double) here. I have only just noticed the similarity between him and a young boy in the town. I don't know the family, but I often see his mother pushing him around the shops in his wheelchair. I do know that he goes to a Special Needs school.

    1. Oh, I know your daughter! I think she has actually commented here herself before. :)

Now that is interesting that spencer has a twin over there! But wow, I'm SO glad mine is not in a wheelchair. Life is difficult enough! ha.
