One Man's Trash...

I worked an estate auction this past week. A little old widower's home. He was in his 80's and has passed on. His two daughters were there. Nice people. The neighbors and people who knew him and his wife said they were sweet people with a neat and tidy house. The house had been built in the 50's but it really looked new as far as upkeep and condition. It was the little things that gave it's age away..like the 1950's green porcelain bath tub. :)
When I was leaving at the end of the day, I noticed a box lot left for the trash.
Since I was in a hurry, I didn't dig through it but just took the whole thing home. I figured I could always take the stuff to the thrift store if I didn't end up wanting it. I could tell it was a lot of old kitchen items. Many from the 50's and 60's.
After digging through the bunch of tiny jello molds and cookie cutters I was delighted to find...
  1. This old stainless measuring cup with the teaspoon measurements in the lid. The top of the lid says "Compliments of the Marathon Oil Company". I couldn't find it online, but did find the lid by itself selling on ebay for an opening bid of $8.99. I wonder what the price of gas was when these little things were given out with your tank-ful. :) I'm sure the gas was leaded, too!
  2. A green glass plant mister. It's now sitting beside my other one that is brass and clear glass.
  3. A pair of ladies crocheted gloves, complete with cross stitch and rhinestone accents. The washed up nicely and fit me perfectly.
  4. A set of plastic plates with the dividers. My boys love these kind of plates! I'm sure they had glasses included at one time. They were probably in another box! ha.
  5. And this cute little 4 cup teapot. It's stamped on the bottom Gibson and Sons, Ltd., Burslem, England. It has a registration number, too, along with an artist's number I'm guessing. A little online search says that particular mark was used between 1912 and the 1920's. How sweet. And I collect teapots, too! I'm happy I saved it from the trash. :)

Isn't free fun?

  10. I think working auctions would be great fun - hard work too I'm sure.

Thought about you yesterday as we celebrated my 50-year old son, Carl's birthday! Carl is developmentally disabled and lives with me ... he doesn't drive, is high functioning enough to work full time at a local supermarket ... I reflected on the ups and downs of raising my amazing son and then thought of you raising your sons.

  15. Well as long as it was all boxed up and ready to go
And no dumpster diving took place at your show
That is fine with my ocd
And it's always interesting to see what one could see
I had no idea what that second thing was
Still a little fuzzy just because
First thought it was some ancient bong
    I guess I was wrong..hahaha

  16. Pat ~ and the stuff was all clean as a whistle.
Of course I still had to run it all through the dishwasher just in case
a little germ was still there in haste. ha.
You spray your indoor plants with water..give them a little mist.
Just water...nothing else....no smoke or weed or pot. lol....
And that goes for the plant itself, too. lol....

  20. So glad the boys enjoyed the plates.

I do remember that our plastic plates had cups with handles that matched and fit perfectly in the littel grove. Funny how seeing that picture made me remember we had green, blue, yellow, red. I always wanted the yellow one.

  29. What wonderful finds for you. I wish you'd been around to rescue some of the treasures we had to give away or scrap when my father died. I'm sure those ladies would be delighted to know those items found a good home.

  30. I have one of the aluminum measuring cups with lid also! It was my Grandmothers'. She used it for mixing up her gravy ingredients. The bottom of mine says "MIRRO the finest aluminum made in U.S.A." The company celebrated its 100 anniversary in 1997. Enjoy your new goodies. Give the boys an early HAPPY BIRTHDAY from us.

  31. Melissa ~ this one has stirring marks in the bottom and I imagined she had stirred up her flour and water in it for gravy!

    Yep...18...can you believe it?

  32. Love all the treasures, and I'm also a teapot collector. That needs to be changed to a was, but I know I have little self control when it comes to all dishes!

  33. My late father in law use to bring us boxes of goodies like that after he had retrieved the one item that he wanted out of the box he bought at the auction. Free is the most fun.
