Valentine Memories

Remember making those decorated shoeboxes for the
school Valentine's Day parties? Oh, the pressure to
come up with a neat looking mail box! I always liked
having that list the teacher sent home and neatly
crossing off each name as I signed their cards.
It was also very important which cards you gave
to each classmate. The best ones to your favorite
friends and the neatest 'boy' ones to the cutest boys!
♥♥♥♥♥
One frustrating thing I remember was that I always
received several Valentine's where they spelled my
name "Besty". Used to drive me crazy! I remember
thinking, "It's easy to spell! You just have to sound it out!"
Then there was opening the Valentine's sent to me!
The fun ones had candy attached. And those candy hearts
with the messages? Oh, I took them sooo seriously!
If one said "You're Cool" from one of the boys, that
was just the best! LOL!
♥♥♥♥♥
Happy Valentine's Day!
Hope at least one sweet thing happens to each of you today!

  4. Sometimes it took hours to decide who would get what card. We would buy them and then I would open them and try to decide!!!

Your post really did bring the memories back!

  5. Oh, I do remember every bit of that! The messages on the hearts...yes, I just knew someone selected that message just for me, as I had for them! You have a good Valentines day my friend and come say hi when you can :D

  8. They were just confused because they knew "Betsy" was the "BEST!"

My most memorable Valentine's Day was when a friend of mine bought TWO identical cards that read, "To My One and Only!" True story. And they call me a "male slut."

  9. People still (even adults) spell my name Besty sometimes. Don't understand that one!!! It seems so easy!!!!

I remember all of those little valentines with words on them... There were certain ones for certain people!!!! ha.... I do remember that my mother MADE me give Valentines to everyone in my room --since nobody would get left out. That was very nice of her--although I wasn't sure of that decision when I was young... ha

    Happy Valentine's Day.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  10. Cute! Thanks for sharing. (Did you have to do 3 boxes for your triplets each year?)

  11. That's not a custom we ever had in England as far as I know. Some schools here (I read) have banned Valentines cards this year. My mum always used to send me a card, so I wouldn't be disapppointed if no-one else did. I knew it was her! (But thanks, mum, anyway.)

  12. Oh yes, I remember well in second grade that Wendy's MOM apparently made HER box as it was a fully decorated, pimped out hat box! My little shoebox covered in crepe paper was pitiful in comparison...lol! And I remember saving the "boring" valentines for those I did not know very well (or like) and then finding that I, in turn, got some of those in my own box...lol!

  15. Thanks for bringing back such "sweet" memories. We used white paper bags instead of shoe boxes way back in the day. Valentine decorations are still my favorites beacause of these memories. Here's to the sweet life...Cheers and Happy Valentine's Day : )

  16. Maybe those Besty's were subliminal play on the word, and they truly thought you were their best valentine!! Maybe? Just a thought.
happy valentines day to you and the 5 men

  18. Well, thanks everyone...never thought to turn the "besty" dilemma into a good one by saying they were thinking best..y. haha. nice idea.

  19. Sandy ~ oh yes, when all 4 were in grade school, I helped them all make theirs. Although Taylor didn't need much help. Fun memories...but I'm kinda glad those days are over! LOL!

  22. I never got any valentines when I was in school! My box was always empty!

  23. Yes I remember the shoe boxes. We decorated them with construction paper and doilies. I always worried I wouldn't get very many though I don't think that ever turned out to be the case. I remember filling them out for each and every person in class. I later bought and mailed valentines for a number of years. As my Christmas card list increased, over 80, my valentines decreased. Then postage kept rising and I went to email. Now I no longer send them but perhaps blogging is the replacement.

  26. Valentine's Day was always a favorite with me too. Wish my boys could enjoy it. Maybe they'll be happy when the leftover chocolate goes on sale.

  27. Well, wouldn't you have preferred something better than "you're cool"?..like maybe, "You're pretty" or something? Well, except for one village school I never had to contend with Valentines day growing up as I was in all boys schools! Jst as well it was wasn't mixed as I'm sure I would have been a total mush and spent far too long making valentines!

Enjoy your 3 day valentine's weekend to the fullest. Happy V day Betsy!...Hey, I actually typed your name correctly. usually I am the one who types Besty...but like those have already said here, I would take that as a compliment in fact.

  28. Happy Valentines Day my beautiful friend! Hope you are enjoying your weekend! By the way, I can relate to the name spelling issue, now I turn it into a joke.

  29. What a fun post. I remember all the anxiety so well. What if I forgot someone! What if someone forgot ME?! Then coming home replete with valentines to look over and analyze. Wonderful stuff.

I remember the boxes, too. I loved picking out the cards for my schoolmates. :)
