My blog friends with autistic children know that every little step
of progress is something to be celebrated! Last week, their
teacher called me in the middle of the day.
Usually, this is not a good thing...to hear her voice on the
phone while they are at school with her! But this time
she said she had good news! As most of you know,
the triplets are non-verbal. Spencer can say a few
requests, saying, "I want...". Alex can not say anything.
Harry says only 2-3 words... very garbled, but we know
what he is saying. Anyway, his teacher was calling to say
that she asked him what his name was and he
answered "Huh-wee". Yay! She thought it may have been
a fluke, so she took him around and had other people ask him
what his name was, and he continued to answer "Huh-wee".
They even visited the principal so she could ask! LOL!
I was excited when I hung up the phone and laughed
at the curves life throws at you. At 16 years of age,
we should be celebrating those driver's licenses
and first dates and instead we are thrilled at Harry
answering a simple question. But in some ways, it's
more of a miracle than when your toddler does it for
the first time... and seems even sweeter because of
the long wait. So celebrate with me! Even days later,
Harry is still answering that question correctly. And I
wonder if he thinks we are crazy asking that over and
over when we obviously know who he is. LOL!
So, thank you, God... for simple, small gifts
that spur us on in this endeavor! :)

  11. Definitely something to celebrate! In spite of our existing in a cynical world where so many have an outlandish sense of entitlement, things like this force us to thrust minor complaints and self-centered feelings aside. These "minor miracles" help us put things in perspective, and share in others' joys and accomplishments instead of wallowing in our own petty interests.

So, i have to jsu task you this--how convenient to time being gone for the auction (As your status says) all day so the Mister has to be Mr. Mom all day...adn jsut in time for Valentines! Hmmm... ulterior motives? Yes, he wil most likely fall madly in love with you all over again when he again realises once more all your do for everyone to keep your family rolling along and knit together.

    Good luck with that!

  31. Hurray for Harry from Tokyo, Japan! What a wonderful moment for you & your family. And how kind too of the teacher to call you to tell you in details. This made me smile & made me cry too. Happy Thursday!

  32. Mr. Fox ~ that was a very wise and profound comment...and oh, so very true!

    ReplyDelete
  33. And....Mr. Fox...I love that backwards acrostic! I would imagine that is even more difficult to do that the regular time. Thank you so much! It's going on my side bar when I get a minute this evening! xo

  34. Natalie ~ sorry about the PECS not working. Spencer and Harry have moved on from that to an electronic device where you type on something like a computer keyboard and your words show up on a screen and a voice says the words. But they are very proficient at the typing. Alex, on the other hand, is still using PECS which good success.

  35. Thanks so much for celebrating with us, everyone! We're pretty excited! :)

  36. Go Harry! How wonderful that he has excellent adults in his life promoting his every milestone.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Betsy, I'm so glad you liked the backwards acrostic. See? I'm not always icy.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Mr. Fox, no you aren't but..then...I already knew that, didn't I? ;)

OK..I need an acrostic about you! Give me a few days and I'll come up with one.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Wow, a lot of ways you could go, there. You could take the easy route and do "David," use "David M. Lynch," or do "The Silver Fox." (I'd love to see what you'd come up with for "X.") And there's always the Foxster, but that's a character, not really me. Any way you tackle it, I'm looking forward to it.

  46. Betsy, I just read this ... once to myself...then the Colonel walked by to ask, "What is it?"
I was just biting my lower lip and shaking my head...I read it aloud to him...and we see TWO miracles...of course Henry's accomplishment...but even more powerful...your sense of humor and acceptance and love all rolled into one spirit! Yes, thank you, God! Peace be with you, Betsy! And HURRAH for Harry!
