Night Sounds

The sound of crickets is a classic summer sound,
isn't it? We've had a cool summer here in
Ohio and our windows have been open most nights.
Usually this sound is one of those, like the sound of the ocean
or the hum of a oscillating fan, that puts us to sleep.
But this summer we have had the loudest crickets outside
our bedroom window! Most are giving that classic chirping
sound, but another does the same pitch and rhythm as my
cell phone ring! Thinking that your cell is ringing out in the kitchen
is not the type of sound that lulls you to sleep, believe me!

  1. I have a white noise maker that helps me sleep. It's actually on the rain setting which sounds a little like a fuzzy sound. I can't do nature sounds or I'd never fall asleep.

I think the new picture at the top might be my favorite yet. Is it one you took? It's gorgeous.

  2. I love the summer sounds of crickets and would love to sleep with my windows open so they could sing me to sleep. But, it is hard to sleep in the sweltering heat of a southern summer night.

And I agree with you...there's nothing soothing about the ringing sound of a cell phone-like cricket's song.

  4. I love the sound of crickets on a summer night. I just heard a piece on NPR about the sounds of seven different kinds of crickets and katydids. Maybe that cell phone like one is a katydid?

  5. I am being lulled to sleep by the crickets, but it's been cool at night and they are loud here in Ny as well. Butthey are not getting into my house as frequently this year- so I'll deal with the sound being loud. Thanks for visiting my blog earlier- if you lived closer I'd be teaching you to crochet in a day or 2 no problem.

  6. chirp chirp...the crickets seem to manage themselves here, but those katydids!
I love the sounds of nature, but thinking crickets are my cell phone would be a bit..uhm..disconcerting in the wee hours. I have enough trouble thinking the Mister is the fog horn at Cape Fear.

  7. I have a sleep dream sound app on my Cellphone and I have it play for about 20 minutes each night, lurve it. I can choose all kinds of sounds. When I think of crickets I think of summer time too. Zzzzzzzz

  8. This reminds me of a story that my father used to tell; when he was a boy, a cricket got inside their apartment and his parents (my grandparents) just could not find it. It made loud chirping noises in the night for weeks, making it impossible for anyone to sleep.
    Have a great Friday.:)

  9. I love the night sounds - especially in the fall! It seems like all the insects speak louder as they know their time is coming to an end...

  10. cute cartoon. I sleep better when the floor fan is on. The sounds outside are pleasant but the sounds inside the house: tv still on, kitchen noises, wake me up.

  11. Kayren ~ the header is from googleimages. It's perfect for fall, huh! :) We've never had one of those white noise makers, but we do have an oscillating fan in our bedroom that runs about 10 months out of the year.

  13. Oh Betsy that is so funny...LOUD crickets! We have a lot of sounds at The Glen that were hard to get used to...out here it is the sound of the creek frogs that make a deep GULPING sound...I was actually AFRAID of it at first...until I found out it was only frogs!

  14. We have box turtles in the house as pets. We feed them crickets every other week. Well, they are winding down for winter and aren't eating as much. So their dozen large crickets are still running around in their terrarium. I get the lovely sound of crickets every single night! They are soooo loud!!

  17. I would love to have my window cracked just a little to hear the great outdoor sounds BUT with the a/c running my husband says I am not efficient!!!! lol I don't think a little crack would hurt!

  18. A cricket that sounds like my cell phone... or a cell phone that sounds like a cricket... I think both would drive me batty!

  19. Christian ~ the first time this happened, Taylor was out late and I sat straight up in bed thinking that it was him calling! I can't believe how much it sounds like a phone ringing!

With the layers of noise in our house when the guys are home, I can't set my cell to ring with music...I would never hear it over a couple of simultaneous Alvin and the Chipmunks songs. :)

  22. I love your autumn header! That's beautiful.

Our street is so busy that the crickets seem to compete with the cars. I love when it's quiet enough to hear the sounds of nature.

  23. Hahahaha.

Personally I can;t stadn crickets chirping all night long. It does anything but put me to sleep. Soo loud! I'd rather listen to nothing (like in rural England) or Frogs croaking, even owls would be ok. Better yet--the sounds of traffic. Ahhhh..
