Do I Have A Bidder?

One of my good friends' husband is a 'son' of a father-and-sons
owned rel-estate company and they are professional auctioneers.
They asked me if I would be interested in working their monthly
auctions as a clerk. Today was my first auction and it was really
fun! It was a large, multi-estate auction with lots and lots of
antiques. I learned to scan driver's licenses and register people
with a paddle number. After a full day of the actual auctioning
(how in the world do they talk like that????) we checked people
out and took their payments. If I had a few extra hundreds
lieing around, I would have bid on a table full of Haviland
china, some gorgeous old framed botanical prints
and some of those large pickling jars. And that grandfather
clock and beautiful old cabinet, too!

  1. That sounds like a great job! You'll learn so much. BUT, there's so many pretty things... Betsy, you've got to come play What I'm Not Buying this Weekend... comment or post, either way, we all need the thrill of not buy Haviland and a grandfather clock:) Or try to join in anytime. xxx ooo

  2. What fun! When we lived in South Caroline we regularly attended local auctions in search of mod treasures. Even if you don't buy anything, just watching makes for a day's worth of entertainment.

  3. That sounds like a really fun time you had! I've always wondered how the auctioneers talk like that, and I'm really a fast talker. I also have trouble understanding them. The one auction I went to I never bid because I couldn't figure out exactly what they were saying so I didn't know how much I would be paying. It just went too fast.

  6. Kayren ~ oh, I know! I could barely understand them. It does go so fast. It really was entertaining to watch the bidders, too....some would barely wink or nod.

  14. My mother used to work at London's Christies. I remember how Napoleon's jacket got a lot than the Caverns' loo door with all the Beatles's signatures graffiti'd on it!
