"The Springing of the Year"

A Prayer in Spring Robert Frost (1915)
~~~~ Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.
~~~~
Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.
~~~~
And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.
~~~~
For this is love and nothing else is love,
The which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends He will,
But which it only needs that we fulfil.

  1. Gorgeous daffodils.;) I love those spring flowers; in the Denmark they are called "Easter Lilies", as they often bloom around Easter.
    Have a great Friday.;)

  2. I have decided that it is very easy to be simple in the Springtime... how can one not be content in the natural life and splendor that surrounds?!

  3. Betsy, you have daffodils already? Marvelous!

  4. Lavinia ~ yes, daffodils! Yea! Not a single bud on a tree, though...just the ground bulbs are blooming and only a high in the 40's today...but it's a start! My daffodils almost always get ice on them after blooming, so I would expect that we'll get another snow.

  6. Beautiful daffodilss! Robert Frost has lovely thoughts of spring! The little meteor he mentions is a hummingvird - what an apt description!

  8. I love this picture and the poem. Daffodils are Isabel's favorite flowers and she is checking on them daily to check on their progress. Ours came from upstate NY and seem to lag behind in this state!

  9. A most pleasant way to herald in this first day o' spring! Thanks you! Mr. Frost is so gentle with words, isn't he?

  10. P.S. How'd that "s" get there? See it on the "Thank"? From here, it looks like it's hanging on for dear life! Perhaps one of us should throw him a rope. All I've got is dental floss. I suppose I should give it a shot. *repeatedly and unsuccessfully tosses line to "s"* At this rate, I'll never be declared a saint.

  13. I can't believe you have daffodils!!! You're as cold as we are here (usually, I thought) and we don't have flowers anywhere, and it's not just me without my landscaping yet. Our last piles of parking lot snow are just now finally melting. What's up with your daffodils? I'm still in shock!

  14. Kayren ~ we had a couple of days in the high 60's and they really popped out! But it was in the 20's last night...they never seem to last long because they freeze! I wish they just knew to stay in the ground another month so they could be in bloom longer!
