Going and Coming

"Going and Coming"
Norman Rockwell
~~~~
I just love this painting! The family going on a little day trip
to the lake. Isn't this just how it really is? So much fun
and anticipation on the way...and then the worn out
feeling on the way home. Poor old mom and dad look
like they have really had it! The only one that looks the
same is the grandma in the back! She must have
sat under a shade tree and relaxed all day!
I fondly remember that feeling of being worn
out from a fun day as a kid.
And look...it's before car seats and seat belts!
  1. I've never seen that one before. LOVE it!
    It seems whenever we go on a trip the boys are in the car 10-15 minutes before we need to leave. When it's time to come home everyone is tired and cranky.
  2. Hilarious! I too immediately noticed the grandma, she seems exactly the same. The mother though is completely worn out.;))
  3. Protege ~ oh yes, the mother! And we all know why she's exhausted...she prepared the food before going, packed the cooler, served it all up...all the while keeping a continuous head count of her kids! :)
  4. I've never seen this Norman Rockwell picture before, but I love it!
    It's amazing that we're all alive having never used a seat belt until we were in, what, college?
  5. I love Norman Rockwell! I could look at them forever. There is so many stories to be made out of them...if that makes any sense.
    BTW, the cranberry crunchies really are good....surprisingly so.
  6. Yes, I totally agree. You have made me remember some fun days we had when I was little, at a beach in the South Of England. We took everything with us, including the kitchen sink I believe!
    And I love that picture of your salad. I'm terribly hungry now.
  11. I love this painting also. Yes, wonder how we all survived no seat belts? Well for one thing, there weren't as many cars, and they couldn't go very fast, plus we only had back roads to travel. None of these super highways.
  12. Fun memories of picnics at provincial parks. Catching tadpoles in the pond, three-legged races, potato sack races, and lots of BBQ over charcoal briquets. Good memories!
  14. This is a great picture! It has so much to say. I love art that speaks to you on so many levels. These folks are a hoot, but I guess they are so funny because it is so real. I hope I never get too old to not go have fun because it will be so much effort. We better have fun while we can. Wasn't Norman Rockwell great?!?!?!
  15. OH, Trish ~ I can see Avery and her kids getting you out to a shade tree and making sure your lemonade glass is full in a few decades! :)
  16. Yes, the grandma looks exactly the same! Heh, heh...maybe she's dead?
  17. Grandma looks the same in both scenes because she is set on living through the outing. She must be made of steel because she has to share the backseat with the rowdy bunch.
