A Favorite Tradition

Christmas wouldn't be complete in our home without watching
A Christmas Carol while eating homemade carmel corn and
drinking hot spiced cider!
And it has to be this particular version of the movie! Nobody plays Scrooge like Alastair Sim! Two of my favorite scenes...pass the tissues, please!
" I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year!"

"My dear children, I am very anxious that you should know
something about the History of Jesus Christ.
For everybody ought to know about Him."
-Charles Dickens

  1. I love this story, too! My favorite version is the one with George C. Scott and I finally got it on dvd last year. We need to plan a *viewing* night, too:)

  2. We got ours on dvd, too! It's nice to be able to watch it when you want...without the commercials!
Fun, fun! Are your kiddos scared of certain parts? I remember being scared to death of the Ghost of Christmas to Come. eeeek!

  4. Betsy, I have never seen this version! Sim is a bit scary looking!!! Will have to look at it.

You know I am mom to little ones as my most recent view of this story was with Michael Caine as the scrooge and The Muppets as supporting actors!!! :)

  8. Jill ~ Funny you mention the Muppet Christmas Carol as I have one of their songs stuck in my head from that movie today!

Yes, this is a bit scary...probably too much for your two youngest!

  9. It is a lovely film. I enjoy the Muppet Christmas Carol too, gives it all a slant of humour in childish fashion.

  10. This Sim version is our favorite, too. Christmas just wouldn't be the same without it. Humbug.

  11. Hubby likes the George C. Scott version best, but for me it's the Muppets version!

  12. I don't think I've seen this version, but what a timeless story. It is a tear jerker, but has such a wonderful message!

  14. Aren't traditions some of the loveliest parts of the holidays. I think we all crave a bit of ritual and sentiment!

I just had fun scrolling down your sidebar. I love your white (flocked?) Christmas tree. With the right vintage ornaments it could be quite a burst of festive '50's mod!

And your basket "stockings" -- how unique. I've never seen that before. They're Longaberger baskets, aren't they? You're pretty close to Longaberger country. We took a day trip to visit the headquarters when we lived in Columbus. Fun place, although we were very disappointed that they didn't actually sell baskets. Go figure!

  15. MG ~ yes, you could make this tree look so MOD! Actually, it is old....probably from the 50's! I bought it at a neighbor's garage sale a few years ago.

The basket stockings aren't Longaberger...just very similar!
Yes, we are close to them and I've toured the factory, etc...fun!
Back when I worked and before kids, I collected those baskets and still have about a dozen nice big ones. Now I just find the look-a-likes! ;)

  17. Your tradition sounds wonderful! I'm kinda embarrassed to say that I have never seen this. Maybe I should check it out this year and have a little family night of our own.

  18. I agree! This is the very best version of The Christmas Carol. Tiny Tim always made me tear up.

  19. Your home sounds like a wonderful place ... I'm glad I happened upon you. (Hugs) to you re. your boys with autism ... I discovered in the past couple of years (after 12 years of marriage) that my husband has Asperger's. It explains a lot, but then again opens whole new cans of worms. It's not an easy life, and my hat is off to you.

  21. Me, too! I have to watch at least one version of this and absolutely love the musical with Albert Finney. I'm going to post about that version over at the tea society next week.

    Have a lovely weekend!

  22. It IS the best version. Every year I cry my eyes out like I've never seen it before. Sometimes I don't even wait for the holidays to watch it. Alistair Sims was the best.
