Getting the Turkey

Today I drove out to a cute little Amish turkey farm
where we buy our Thanksgiving turkeys. It's about a 30 minute
drive and I always enjoy going. The turkeys are delicious ~
fresh and free range. I always get a kick out of hearing flocks
turkeys gobbling when I go ~ must be a chorus of happy
turkeys that realize they have been spared!
The little original homested still sits on the property. The store is full of all kinds of yummy Amish goods ~ fresh rolls, pies, cheese...and turkeys! I got a couple of cans of their turkey broth, too, for soup with the leftover meat. I love their slogan "Grown in the Open Air and Sunshine!"

  1. I was reading in the local paper this morning about a couple of farms in the area that raise these kind of Turkeys. I think I'll get one next year. I guess they run about $75 for a 20 pounder!!

You and your family have a blessed Thanksgiving Holiday. Strider

  2. What fun! I was really hoping to be making a turkey this year, but I was outvoted again. We'll be having our traditional Thanksgiving Dinner of steak once again!

  6. oh my gosh.....you got to Landes Meats????? Noah and I were just there in that area yesterday (if this is the same one) I had no idea you were that close if you are!

Have you gone across the street to A Bushel & A Peck? It is run by German Baptist family I went to school with...and they have some amazing bulk goods for sale! ALSO yummy!

Landes is the best for fresh meats and you KNOW where they come from as they raise and butcher all their own meat right there on the farm as far as I know. Their CHEESE bread is superb especially toasted with a little butter!

    AND their pies are divine!!!

  10. LAA ~ steak? Well, you aren't the only ones not having turkey. I posted a few days ago about different traditions and I know of one family who has a Mexican buffet! Have a happy holiday!

  11. Melinda ~ I was at the Bowman and Landis on Ross Rd just north of 201 and Rt 40. Is there more than one farm? If you had been there, I would have recognized you and Noah! Yes, all of their stuff looks wonderful! I was tempted to get rolls and a few pies instead of baking my own! I'll have to remember to try the cheese bread!

I've never been to the other place you mentioned! Sounds wonderful, too! Have a wonderful holiday!

  13. oh no...we were at the one on Haber Road in Clayton, Ohio...outside Englewood...it is connected with Bowman Landes however as the Landes are the same....and they sell all the same stuff and Bowman Landes turkeys. This place is out in the country off Rt. 40......and run by German Baptist.....they have such good things there!

Across the road is Bushel & A Peck....also run by German Baptist family and wonderful bulk food store.

I guess we were at different ones. Ours is only open Wed. through Saturday as Mondays they are closed and Tuesdays they butcher.

Bushel & A Peck is open more often than that and they even sell their fresh chicken's eggs.

  14. I would love to taste a free range bird. My grandmother made the best fried chicken I've ever had, but she always said that birds bought in the grocery store weren't as good as the free range birds of her youth.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

ps My visit to Ohio Amish country was beautiful. I envy you your drive.
