Welcome to the first Sepia Saturday!
What began as a fictitious theme day by Alan
Burnett of News From Nowhere, has actually
started as of today! No rules...just post a
sepia picture on your blog!
This is Winifred Hanna, my great, great aunt Winnie.
We all called her Auntie. It's most appropriate
that I put up her picture so close to Thanksgiving
because it is her original recipes for Cranberry Salad
and homemade Chicken and Noodles that I still
make each holiday. I also have a few antique
dishes that belonged to her.
So, happy Sepia Saturday, blog friends!
Join in, if you would like!
She is beautiful ~~ would love to see her break out in a full smile!
ReplyDeleteBeing inspired by you, I made us "Pilgrim" Sandwiches for lunch on soft rolls.... Oh so good!!
Had Apple Pie this afternoon with whipped cream.
Next week I better FAST!!
Hi Betsy
ReplyDeleteyou are very sweet calling by...I have cut back my blogging considerably and also been very busy helping with the landscaping on a project we are doing...it has been over 30* so with lugging trees and shrubs about and digging holes and planting I am knackered every night by a very early hour.
I hope to have some time to catch up soon but I did need a break from blogging too...
So all is well thank you Betsy..
Happy days
Beautiful vintage picture, she is lovely...
ReplyDeleteWonderful new header, yes, it is winter soon.;)
Hope you are having a great Saturday,
xo

ReplyDeletevery cool pic. and memories to go with it as well. hope you enjoy the chicken and noodles...smiles.
ReplyDeleteNow I have to find a dictionary and look up "Sepia"! You are making me work!!!! LOL!
ReplyDeleteYou beat me to it!
ReplyDeleteLovely photo. Didn't the women always look so elegant and well put out in those days? (Even though their lives were really pretty hard and filled with drudgery—unless they had money, of course.)
I think this will be a fun Saturday theme, don't you?
Kat
What a fun idea from Alan. but, tell me can any sepia toned image work? After all, one could simply take a new photo and colour it as such in photoshop! So, I'm suspecting not!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any of my families old photos but how lovely this one is. Your Auntie looks so young here. Isn't that a marvel how time marches on and every one old today once was so young and vivacious, unless dreadfully ill? And here you are today stil using her recipes. Hmm...I wonder if some great grandchild might make something like I did--but let's see what would that be that is squarely unique? Nope, can't think of anything or anything even written down!
I'm not sure such an outfit was very comfy to wear but they did indeed look so elegant back then.
Betsy,
ReplyDeleteAhh, yes! Aunt Winnie does continue to live thru us. She was a fine lady who loved everyone. She also made a great apricot pie!
Happy Thanksgiving!
The Bach
Poetikat~ oh, yes...Alan's post popped up while I was at my computer and this was an easy one to do!
ReplyDeleteMmm ~ that's a good question. Although, Alan said there weren't any rules. If we can't photoshop them, we will run out rather quickly I would think!
ReplyDeleteYes, their clothes and hair always look perfect in these old pictures. Makes you wonder how the did it without all the modern conveniences we have today. Just starching and ironing that blouse of hers looks daunting...not to mention doing her hair! I am happy to have known her in person in her later years.
Bach ~ apricot pie....that sounds so good! Did anybody save that recipe?
ReplyDeleteMmm ~ this just in from Alan ~ they can be old or newly created sepia toned pictures! So, the sky is the limit!
ReplyDeleteShe is beautiful...like you!!! I love the idea of a Sepia Saturday! I'll enjoy seeing your beautiful photos!!! Hope you are having a wonderful holiday weekend!! ~Janine XO
ReplyDeleteWonderful picture, and so cozy that you still use her recipes! Nice to meet you, Aunt Winnie.
ReplyDeleteI've posted my own sepia today too.
Betsy,
ReplyDeleteSorry. I don't think anyone has the apricot pie recipe. Maybe Ahuntie Dee would. You'll have to check with her. Oh and do you remember her baked custard pudding where she would place a slice of bread on top and it would get toasty brown...mmmm
The Bach
Leah ~ oh thanks for letting me know....coming over to check out your picture!
ReplyDeleteBach ~ no, I don't remember that custard! Sounds delish!
ReplyDeleteHum...Sepia Saturday sounds like a wonderful idea..an archivist's dream, actually. Thank you for sharing this one of your lovely aunt. I love that her recipes are living on through you. How beautiful:)....
ReplyDeleteSounds like a neat event, Betsy. And I love the picture of you Aunt. She was quite pretty!!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend!
xoxo

Betsy, thank you so much for stopping by. I have only just recently (wihtin the past month) realized that you and Willow are sisters. I have been by here a few times, not sure if I have said hello. Life becomes a blur when I return to school each year, though I do try to peek in here often. Reading blogs networked through Willow Manor is just one of my favorite pastimes...such marvelous people!
ReplyDeleteI do have a few really great sepias, so I look forward to particiapting in a few of these Saturdays! Your Auntie is just absolutely adorable!
Firelight ~ well, thanks for stopping by! I know you from Willow always saying the sweetest things about you! I'll look forward to your sepias in the future Saturdays!
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a great thanksgiving Betsy.
ReplyDeletesepia Saturday - a great idea, I've just recently decided to start scanning our family's old photos, so might join in sometimes.
and I also had a great Auntie Winnie.
:-)
Sepia Saturday is a wonderful idea. I love those old photos. It is so much fun looking back into the past. Thanks for posting the pic of your Auntie. I think the Bach kind of looks like her.
ReplyDeleteHello! I wanted to take a moment and thank you for stopping by my blog today. Love nugget!! Pumpkin pie is wonderful. Your computer room, what a job taking down wall paper. I too have a son with autism. It's a challenge and rewarding! God knows which can handle and when. I'll be back to visit your lovely blog. Take care. Hugs. Tammy
ReplyDeleteA Stitch in Thyme ~ thanks for popping over! Sounds like we have some things in common! I look forward to more visits with you!
ReplyDeleteHello Betsy ... what a lovely portrait of Aunt Winnie ... in lovely condition too.
ReplyDeleteI'm too late to join in a Sepia Saturday, so I've posted a photo of my mum as a child (along with her older sister).
Betsy, since you'll be arriving in Aspen tomorrow for Mr. Toast's Tea, I've invited you to join me for dinner tomorrow night? Care to unwind and talk tea?
ReplyDeleteRebecca ~ Oh, absolutely! Thank you...I would love to have dinner and chat! What a wonderful idea!
ReplyDeleteI may only be able to make it for night cap, but can I ask for any better company? How delightful!
ReplyDeleteWe'll stay up late and have a nightcap with you, Mr. Toast. :)
ReplyDeleteMy ADORED grandmother was Winifred...and I always said I would name my daughter Winnie...but then I married Hubbie and it just wouldn't work! And you can put it together and know WHY!! HA!
ReplyDeleteI love Sepia photos! When Alan posted about Sepia Saturday I wondered if someone would "take off" on that theme!
Jill ~ ha-ha...that is TOO funny! Before I was married, I wanted to name a daughter Brooke. It wouldn't work for that same reason!
ReplyDeleteIt reminded me of Ric Rac.
And same reason we couldn't name Harry after both great grandpas...Harry Chester...just too funny..or too cruel to do to a child!
