Snowy Owl Shortbread Cookies

OK.  These are so stinkin' cute, I can't stop smiling at them! ha.

Have you noticed how popular owls are right now?
I pinned a cute photo of owl cookies in the fall and
didn't find the time to bake them.
So for Christmas, I thought
snowy owls would be even better!

Any shortbread recipe will do.
Roll out 1/2" thick.
3" and 1" round cookie cutters.
Decorate with M&Ms and whole almonds.
Bake 350 for 20-25 minutes until just golden on edges.
Dust with powdered sugar while still warm.
Clean off beak and eyes with a tiny damp pastry brush.

Who decides when a craze should start?

    1. You're right...this is the fun part! All the hustle and bustle is done. You know, I only made half dozen of these...really quick, all on one cookie sheet...just enough to add some cuteness to the table without it being a lot of work.

  4. How wise you are to see that owls are so cute and so popular! These are incredibly cute. I wonder how long they will last! Not very long I would bet. Only 3 more sleeps!! xx

  8. I think if those owls were on my plate
They'd not stay long in their present state
'cause before my coffee I'd had time to sup
I'd swoop down quickly to eat 'em up.
They look a long way too yummy
To stay for long outside my tummy
Which is a shame 'cause they look nice
But taste buds quickly they entice
Perhaps I might try to bake some
In what ever way you make um.

    LOL

If I don't see you again have a great Christmas, Betsy

    3. Wiser? I don't know! We could all munch on a bunch and find out! Did you know a group of owls is called a parliament? :)

      Delete
    4. Didn't know that, Betsy! Thanks for that information - A parliament of owls, eh!
However, the bunch of idiots we have in our parliament in no way can be described as wise - they are just a hoot!! with no wisdom whatsoever.

    9. Ah! a REPLICATING OWL!! LOL Not heard of that species before. Not sure they would taste well with loaves and fishes though LOL.

Just wondered! Has the postman arrived from UK yet? He is taking his time it appears.

    11. Hoot Hoot! - very clever! LOL. Do I detect a dash of Harry Potter with his owl deliveries? Perhaps Proffessor Snape has confiscated it or the owl was mugged by a gang of thieving magpies!! ROFL.

I agree with the others that they may be cute, but not too cute to eat. I'd be scarfing them down with a cup of tea without hesitation!
I don't suppose they would travel well in a parcel, would they?

Not sure how those birds would travel. They might lose an eye or two. :)

    2. A broken wing or two wouldn't hurt the taste any! Yes, I'm hinting! Well, no, not hinting but out right making a fool of myself by asking for a parcel of biccies! You have my address. Or send them with Santa so I don't have to wait on the damned postal service! (smiling)

    3. I pretty sure Santa goes to your country before mine. :) Besides, aren't you just getting coal this year? lol....

    4. Ah, well it isn't the first time!

Speaking of owls, one of my uncles lived in Mexico for several years while doing research for his job. He had a family of owls that lived in his garden in a very tall tree. Back at that time we couldn't send photos by phone or internet, of course, but he would develop his own film and mail our family pictures of those owls! Thanks for jogging my memory! I hadn't thought of it in years!

  17. Oh how cute! I'll copy this great idea. Owls are very popular in Germany this year, too. But first some more wrapping of gifts... and the creme brulèee for our Christmas dinner.... and phoning some friends. I have to keep myself busy today. A very close friend of mine undergoes extremely risky brain surgery today. So, if anybody can spare a little prayer, please, please dedicate it to him. Thank you all and forgive me Betsy, that I used your blog for my plea. I hope, you do not mind!

    2. Thank you so much, dearest Betsy! And we thank God, that our friend survived the 6 hours of surgery! The doctors, who had said before, that the chance of survival was 50%, afterwards said, that everything went well. For all of his friends, but especially for his wife and for their five children this is CHRISTMAS! Peace on earth and great joy...
