1898-1978
(pictured 2nd from the left)
Martha is The Mister's maternal grandmother.
I've posted about her before since we have so many
lovely old photographs of her.
I think this is a high school picture, so maybe it
was taken about 1915? She was born in Greenville,
Michigan but grew up on the family farm in Vaughn,
Washington. She was the oldest of 5 children to
Bert and Emma Sampson.
I love the girls long braids wrapped around their heads!
And their school uniforms are so cute...love the sailor
dresses with the big collars and ties.

great photo!!! I think those were probably the girl's gym outfits. how wonderful that you have so many photos of martha may.
ReplyDeletehappy sepia saturday!
We have a similar photo and I do think they may be gym outfits...makes the one piece thing I wore in High School seem almost fashionable!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on anniversary #2 of blogging and maybe most important of all...hearing Harry say his name! What a gift! Happy Valentines Day to you and your 5 men!
Anita
Hi Betsy, My mother was born in 1900 -- and I have a similar picture of her with some girls at her school. It is very similar except Mom's group were all dressed in white...
ReplyDeleteI'm watching the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics tonight --and they are fabulous!!!
Hugs,
Betsy
Lovely young ladies. I like the name Martha May : )
ReplyDeleteLove the photo; which one is Martha, Betsy?
ReplyDeleteI have a few old photos but not enough to post every Saturday, unfortunately. xa
I love the different expressions on their faces. And I don't think I've ever seen braids worn quite like that before. A really charming photograph.
ReplyDeleteAs everyone has said, a fantastic picture. And thanks also for posting it fairly large so that you can click and zoom in and see those expressions. I must try and remember to do that with mine in future.
ReplyDeletegreat pic betsy...glad we did not have uniforms growing up. i am kinda partial to my jeans...
ReplyDeleteHey! Wondering how far this is from Flint, Michigan ( where Mom's dad grew up ) Great addition to your previous post on Martha, Betsy :)
ReplyDeleteI saw the picture and right away thought about "A league of their own"
ReplyDeleteKimy and Anita ~ oh, thanks for pointing that out. Yes, gym outfits makes perfect sense!
ReplyDeleteAlaine ~ She's second from the left. Thanks for pointing that out..I've added it to the post now.
ReplyDeleteA couple of those girls on the right look a little sour-faced. I wonder what was going on in their heads!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kimy; they do look like gym outfits. I think I've just answered my own question!
Kat
I guessed second from the left! I see shades of your Mister's sister there. Yes, those are definitey vintage gym suits. Cute, huh?
ReplyDeleteYou know what, I bet it's a sports team pic!
ReplyDeleteKat ~ maybe they don't like gym! ha! I wonder if they wrapped their braids around their heads for gym class...just to keep them out of the way? Funny.
ReplyDeleteI also love the plaited hairdos and the bloomers. A wonderful moment in time.
ReplyDeleteLike Alan, I very much enjoyed the enlarged image!
Whoa, sexy outfits, there! (Hey, they probably were at the time.) I have yet to get involved with Sepia Saturday, although I have tons of photos from the first 50-60 years of the last century. My family seemed to lose its fascination with photography shortly after I was born, although I'm sure there was no connection...
ReplyDeleteFascinating outfits, but didn't they all look good in them. I too like the braids, Heehee ... so tidy!
ReplyDeleteI suppose the bulky bloomers would certainly guarantee that no man could ever envision what was under there. I would think no man would be around as it was an all girls exercise group. Oh well, I will stop, it is amazing what the Victoria era from England did to influence us over here. Great photo.
ReplyDeleteMartha is a doll! I agree with Willow - these look like "play" clothes. Wonderful photo!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great photo..love those old ones! A cute lady too, so nice to have family pictures like that! Have a good Valentines day and come say hi when you can :D
ReplyDeleteI Love The Pose.Hands on Shoulders. It Makes the Group Less Formal & More Open & Friendly.A Lovely Photograph.
ReplyDeletewow, I am really liking these Sepia photos
ReplyDelete-these outfits took a lot to get into and a lot of hairdressing to get ready for exercising - at first I thought they were dressed in swimsuits.
Do you know what town or state they were in?
Mr. Fox ~ after seeing that cute pic with Santa...yes, we want to see all those in your collection! You need to join! How fun!
ReplyDeleteyou are too cute....
ReplyDeletei am so HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY to see that you liked the dilly bread...
glad to see it's out there making the rounds.....
Dilly Bread Rules !
Sending love and Happy Valentines Day wishes to you, my friend

Well, most potential entries for Sepia Saturday would be before I joined the family, but I may have to do something to keep blogging if I don't get this problem with my arm fixed soon.
ReplyDeleteSome of them look quite fetching; some look decided unhappy. Ah, so difficult to capture everyone looking their best. And I suspect, like Kim/Mouse, that those are gym bloomers. How modest!
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize they were braids until you pointed them out. I love looking at your old photos every week. If I really had it together I'd join in I have so many, but I'm not.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo! And I'm sure the hands on shoulders added to the team spirit. Go Girls Win!!
ReplyDelete:) The Bach
Betsy, I think you're right about the gym costumes. Great photo!
ReplyDeletethis is such a great photo.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if they are pantaloons rather than skirts. maybe not.
I do like all their various hair arrangements.
