What I Did Wednesday #36

We had sun, then rain, and then more sun!
I picked strawberries and made lemon sugar cookie bars.
I did dishes and laundry and ate sweet cherries.

I mixed up some cilantro-lime-cumin butter
for that sweet corn, and talked to Velvet on the porch swing.
She's the mother to nine of my cats but she won't let me pet her
and she has that look like she doesn't trust anyone.
I think she must have been abused before coming here.
She knows I won't hurt her and has let me touch her kittens
but I'm not allowed to pet her!  Little by little she is becoming
more relaxed and even lay on the foot of the bed the other
day while I sat there having coffee before getting up.

It seems that Slate is star struck over Grey!
Yesterday, they saw me on the front porch from a few houses
down and came running home together like a
scene from the movie Homeward Bound.
He just lights up when she's around and follows her everywhere!
Do you think it's her eyeliner or perhaps her white bikini? ha.

And Hilary, here's the other side of my tea cup that you wanted to see!

Taylor and Lauren will be here for dinner soon.
Need to shuck sweet corn!
Enjoy your evening!

It's birds that keep getting caught here. :( Whiskers came in last night with feathers in her whiskers. Bad girl!

  4. You have such nice, full, interesting days, Betsy. Poor Velvet. She must have had a really bad past if she shies away from you. Maybe Slate will be a good influence on her. How sweet that he has a girlfriend! Hope you aren't jealous. :-) Those lemon bars look so tempting. I rarely have the ambition to bake anymore. Lynne in NC

    1. Velvet is slowly but surely getting there. But she's lived here three years and I've touched her tail a few times and gotten the evil eye. haha.
No, not jealous of Grey....she's a beauty, so I can hardly blame Slate. But it is amusing to see him...he's all giddy around her!

  7. What a lot of photos today, you have been busy. It's a wonder the camera isn't worn out! I love the vase in the first picture, I've got an aspidistra that would look very nice in that . . . Just saying.

I couldn't help but notice the cup of green tea, I think you put that there to get me going, but I'm not taking the bait this time !

My next door neighbours cat, Henry, is also one of the "Don't you DARE touch me!" brigade, just like velvet, and I've known him for eleven years.

  9. I like Velvet. She knows she is loved and taken care of, but she has to guard her independence at the same time. She owns the place, I think.
I like your baking pictures. I should be doing more of that and sending it off with my children. The zucchini has to go into something!

I haven't done any baking with my zucchini yet! I do love some sweet breads stocked up in the freezer...need to go from savory to sweet at some point!

Hope you had a great meal with the kids...how was your corn?

  15. Hi Betsy - wonderful photos and story telling around your sunny, wet, sunny day - just right for growing strawbugs ... and spending a little time relaxing with Mamma velvet, and then baking ... lucky lads when they got home ... and I love the idea of the cilantro-lime-cumin butter with the corn - I do love corn! Happy day today .. cheers Hilary

    1. Yes, she certainly trusts me and brought her litters here for safety. Poor girl. She has come a long way, though. She wouldn't come inside the first year...then she started sleeping on a chair....and now our bed. We can get close but she gets skittish. She loves tiger ....so cute to see her try to charm him. Haha.

  17. My you have been busy!
Such a whirlwind of activity and a great collection of photos.
    Love that planter too.
Shame Velvet won't let you pet her .
On my way walking to town I meet two black cats and always stop to pet them. When they see me coming they run over and meow as if to say hello - If I start petting one they other one comes as well . . . and they won't let me go . . . . keep following and walking right in my path to stop me in my tracks.
That seat swing looks really cool. Just been looking at how it is made - if I had the room I would build one. Do you think it would take my weight? . . . . lol

    1. So cute about the black cats! Haha. They know an old softie when they see one! You could build a porch swing easily! And if you keep up that walking, it could hold two of you. .....lol.....not that we would WANT two of you, though. Lol.....hahahaha...

    2. Cheeky thing!! . . . . but one of me is sure more than enough!! . . . lol
Yes . . . even the cats seem to know I am a big softie - aren't they good judges of character? . . . lol

  19. Well, I certainly don't do all the interesting things you do on Wednesday.
Hubby and I went on our weekly Wednesdate and had the senior buffet with another couple.
    That's always enjoyable.
Started "shoveling" out the house. Having company for dinner tonight.
Realized I have to make another trip to the grocery store. I forgot I had used up several main ingredients for dessert and salad.
The weather is so hot so I'm doing a crock pot balsamic chicken and corn on the cob. That shouldn't heat up the kitchen too badly. Temps...100F.
Of course I have to take time to cruise around Blogland. Then it's off to the races...(:0)
