Salt Cellar Pin Cushion

I brought home a few vintage crystal salt cellars from the
auction trash recently and thought it might be fun to upscale
them to pin cushions.  It literally took me 2 minutes to make
this cute little thing!  And I think the little cellar is happy to
be rescued and given a new life. ha.

To make one, you need a scrap of batting, a scrap of fabric,
a rubber band and some glue.  I wrapped the fabric around the
ball of batting and held it in place with a rubber band.  Then I
trimmed off the excess fabric and glued it into the cellar.
I used hot glue, just so I wouldn't have to wait for drying time.

Lauren and Taylor had chosen gold and grey for their bathroom colors
and I recently saw this little sewing basket that would match.
I thought it would be nice to provide Lauren with a few supplies so she
could sew on a button and make other little repairs.
I didn't want it to look too granny-ish....she's more contemporary
in her style than the vintage and the antique. :)
I filled it with thread spools in a rainbow
of colors, safety pins, straight pins, needles, a measuring tape,
some spools of ribbon and scissors.
And, of course, the little salt cellar pin cushion!

It's just too fun giving little gifts for their first little home!

  7. That is so cute and hopefully with time she will learn to love all the cute little antiques that you will find for them. Think of all the serving dishes, the pictures and knick knacks that they will need and I am sure those auction treasures will hold some nice finds for her. Eclectic is one of the best styles to have and make for a most interesting house decorating style. She already has a lot of style because look at who she picked to spend her future with and I am talking about her future in-laws. Okay, just kidding I was talking about Taylor. You are all blessed to have found each other. I know she will love every gift you give her, I know I would.

    God bless.

    1. haha...yeah, I totally agree that Taylor is a great find. :) You can find anything at an auction eventually....and it will be fun to find things that they love! The nice things about phones now is that I can send them a picture and ask if they want it!

  8. Very cute. I am hoping to release my inner crafty person through that pottery class... if they ever send me a brochure. If they don't I will have to take a little drive and pick one up myself. :)

    4. yes, it would! I wonder what I would make. ha. Bet it would be lopsided. lol....

    5. I have a lopsided one that I made several years back. It got "tired" and flopped over on one side. I thought it made a good cat dish, so I kept it.

  9. Who knew mere scraps could be so 'trendy.' You are definitely on to something here .... where were you (or someone just like you) when I needed a mother-in-law who cared about me.

    1. Oh good...because every modern day bride needs a hip looking sewing box! hahaha! :) Maybe we should get Taylor a few tools? :)

  11. That is such a clever and useful idea. I'm sure Lauren will love it. My sewing kit is a plastic bag with a couple spools of thread and a few needles. I've had it for years and probably only used it five times. That tells you how much I sew : )

    1. haha...well, it sounds like it's all you needed! Seems like Taylor was always loosing buttons off his shirts. I bet I've sewn on a dozen over the years. :)

  15. The basket is a wonderful idea, shopping for girls is so much fun. I was wondering if you were going to do a family cookbook for her also? I made one for our D-I-L as a sort of scrapbook, cookbook. She does appreciate having the family recipes.

  16. Your salt cellar gave me a sweet memory. My mom had a set of them and on one of my grandparents visits, our grandma had a little tea party for us in the backyard. One of the treats was jello in little salt cellars. One of my brothers came too, not because he liked tea parties, but he just liked food.

    1. I bet jello looked really pretty on those tiny dishes! What a cute idea. I love that your brother came. Who could resist a pretty table of treats? ha. Glad to see you hear...was getting worried about you!

    2. Betsy, our home and town are pretty much OK. Just wind damage.
Seems everyone is a bit shell-shocked though. We are used to tornadoes, but these recent ones are just hard to even comprehend. Okies are tough, we will come out of it even better but for now, it is hard.
We are hoping to have a safe room built soon, and are on a waiting list. It should be ready at least for next spring.

  17. What a thoughtful and pretty gift! You really are going to be the best MIL! I don't think I've ever seen a salt cellar before and I don't remember even hearing the term. Thanks for the antiques lesson.

    1. Salt cellars are tiny little bowls that you put at each place setting. You could pinch the salt to ad to your food or some times they came with little spoons!

    2. Thanks for the details Betsy. I'm really surprised that this is the first time I've heard of them. Now when I see them in an antiques shop I'll know exactly what they are!
