Reading the Fine Print

I get headaches.  Not just minor ones, but 48 hour long, sharp pain, sensitive to sound and light headaches!  Sometimes I think they are allergy related, sometimes hormonal.  I haven't had them diagnosed as migraines, but I think they probably would fit the criteria.  When I got some coupons in the mail for the new Advil Migraine, I thought I'd buy some and see if it helped.   I've always taken Advil, finding it to be the best pain reliever for me.... if I take 800 milligrams, that is.  But when I get one of these headaches, I can take that plus an Aleve and it doesn't help at all.

Well, I find the Advil Migraine at the grocery and the pharmacist happens to be there asking if I need any help.  I tell her that I'm curious about this new product and was going to look and see what was so special about it and what the ingredients were.  She was curious, too, and looked at it with me.  The ingredients was 200 mgs of ibuprofen per capsule.  That's it!  Exactly the same as regular Advil!  No caffeine (commonly added, as in Excedrin) no nothing!  And you know what?  The price was higher than regular Advil!  The only thing different was the name and color of the box.  Now, doesn't that just tick you off?  Playing on the pain of migraine sufferers in such a sneaky, greedy way.  Geesh!  So, if you hear anyone raving about the wonderful Advil Migraine medicine and how well it works, tell them that it's all in their head....literally. lol.

  1. Isn't that awful? We found they do the same with Tylenol Arthritis. One of our patients swears by it, but when you look at the label - it's just tylenol.

  11. I'm pretty sure my headaches are hormonal, but then again I do get them not long after holding the phone with my shoulder and the side of my head. That makes me suspect my neck being out of whack. When I get a headache I tense up, so if I think it's going to be bad I'll take Benadryl and ibuprofen before I go to bed.

I thought you were going to say the added ingredient was caffeine. Who needs that when I could just enjoy another cup of French Vanilla?

    1. I get stress headaches, too. And it becomes a ficious cycle, doesn't it? You tense up from the pain and then hurt more because of the tense muscles! ha. I thought it might be caffeine, too but was hoping for something really new to try!

My problem is that I wake up with it, have it all day, go to bed and wake up with it still there! Then by the end of the 2nd day, it finally leaves. Ugh.

  14. I'm just sorry that there wasn't a new medicine for you to try for your headaches.

I have read that there are dietary triggers (among other things) for migraines, so the next time you get one, try to remember what you ate. Hopefully that won't be anytime soon. :)

    1. I know...I'm a fixer, too! The best thing I've found is to take a behind the counter decongestant like Mucinex D and 800 mgs of advil. If I catch it at the beginning I can sometimes make it go away. But if I wake up with it already in full force, I'm stuck for the duration. ugh.

  17. Headaches like that are so wearying. People need help - not deception from a drug company! Seems like you can't trust anyone. I used to get the same - much better these days; I take a drug called Pizotifen every day as a preventative - and maybe I'm just getting older!

  18. Gotta love the internet! This is from http://www.livestrong.com/article/181345-active-ingredients-in-advil/:

Now, on to the new OTC migraine medications. None of them is a new formulation. They are a renaming/relabeling of formulations that already existed in each company's product line. One reason for the different name and label is an FDA requirement for products that are shown to be effective for a condition other than those for which they were first submitted for approval. As more emphasis has been placed on treatment of migraine, these companies conducted clinical trials that showed their products to be effective in the treatment of migraine. Before they could state that, the results of the trials had to be submitted to the FDA and the medication approved for migraine treatment. That said, let's take a look:

    Advil Migraine
Advil Migraine contains 200 mg of solubilized (liquid) ibuprofen. Advil Liqui-Gels contain the same ingredient in the same amount. They're a different color and shape, that's the only difference. The principle behind the solubilized form is that it should work more quickly.

    Excedrin Migraine
Excedrin Migraine contains 250 mg of acetaminophen, 250 mg of aspirin and 65 mg of caffeine per tablet. Excedrin Extra Strength contains the same ingredients in the same amounts.

    Motrin Migraine Pain Caplets
Motrin Migraine Pain Formula contains 200 mg of ibuprofen, the same as Motrin IB Caplets.

    Excedrin Tension Headache
Excedrin Tension Headache formula contains 500 mg of acetaminophen and 65 mg of caffeine caplet or geltab.

Now that you know the actual ingredients in these products you have more choices. For example, if your store is out of Advil Migraine, you can buy Advil Liqui-Gels. If their price is higher on Excedrin Migraine, buy Excedrin Extra Strength or a store brand with the same ingredients. If you're shopping and find the prices of the Migraine formulations to be higher, it's the store that's pricing them that way. The manufacturer suggest a retail price, but the stores actually determine the price at which they sell a product.

So, all told, this looks like a multi-level rip-off! The drug companies are misleading the consumer, and the retailers are hitting the buyer in the wallet! "Buyer beware," indeed!

    1. Wow, thanks for posting this! Very interesting. The Excedrin Extra Strength that isn't extra strength was the one that caught my eye.

  19. Ibuprofen remains my drug of choice after many, many years. The Advil company is pretty low to profit off the migraine pain. But, I guess everyone should take the responsibility for reading the label just like you did, Betsy. Way to go! blessings ~ tanna

yep..the lesson is..don't trust the packaging...read the label!

Our pediatrician told me recently that research shows that Mucinex isn't helpful in eliminating mucus... it's the extra water that you drink (per the instructions on the box) that helps your body eliminate the mucus.

Just one more way that a drug company is ripping people off.

  26. Betsy, I get the same kind of headaches. Wake up with them and it takes a couple days to really get over them. Lately they have been in the front of my forehead and then go to over one eye. They are horrible. They make me anxious too and very hungry but nothing helps. I seem to get them on a Sunday of all days. I have been having them every weekend since Sept. just up until a couple weeks ago. I had bought new feather pillows and a feather comforter from Domestications and I think that might be the culprit of my having so many plus stresssss is a big factor. I wrote an email to Domestications and they suggested I try eliminating the pillows and then the comforter to see if that makes a difference. It has..I think...I had to go back to my old feather comforter that I had bought from them many years ago and don't seem to be bothered by that old thing. So I don't know what it is. thanks for the tip on the Advil Migraine.I have heard people like it...but it must be

    1. Oh, that is too bad! It does sound like you may be allergic.

yes, I agree that stress is a big factor. And I think it can be a ficious circle of being tense because of the pain and then the tense muscles hurt because of the way you are holding yourself from the headache. Crazy!

anxious and hungry? Oh dear...that is not a good combination! I'd eat everything in sight~ lol.

hope your old comforter and pillows do the trick!
